An established presence in the floral business with a lifelong passion for horticulture, Mary Catesby Halsey managed the launch of a revitalized Spruce Flowers in New York before opening MCH Floral Studio in 2018. From 2007 to 2009, Mary Catesby Halsey studied horticulture in Beacon, New York, and managed dozens of gardens and large-scale greenhouses.
Ms. Halsey subsequently spent seven years as a manager with Hudson River Flowers, where she performed the duties of a bookkeeper, buyer, client liaison, and designer. When Spruce shuttered its well-known Chelsea shop in late 2017, she was contacted by mutual friends with the proposition that she revitalize the retail location. Within three months, she had partnered with former Spruce designers to launch a new venture at 208 West 29th Street.
Ms. Halsey envisioned Spruce as a business that still offers its traditional Manhattan window boxes, spruce crates, white orchids, rose cubes, and succulents. At the same time, it markets landscaping and gardening solutions to individual and corporate clients. Services extend to living walls, planter installations, and the creation of attractive streetscapes.
